Being CFO to a business that's already good
A lot of fractional CFO work starts with a mess. Books that don't tie, a lender asking questions nobody at the company can answer, a P&L the owner has quietly stopped trusting. That's a real and useful job, and I've done plenty of it.
Chris and Matt Alioto didn't hire me for that.
Alioto's Garage is one of the most established collision repair groups in the Bay Area. Two brothers who own it together, a portfolio of shops, and a leadership team that has been running and growing the business for years. Between Chris and Matt, Dale, and the rest of the group, they've already built the kind of operation most owners are still working toward. The books are kept, the shops are run well, the bench is deep.

So the work looks different here, and honestly it's the work I find most interesting. When a business is already strong, the financial questions get sharper, not simpler. Where does the next dollar of capital go once the shops have done their job? How do you protect what years of effort have generated instead of letting it sit idle? When a deal comes across the desk, how do you underwrite it with enough discipline to walk away? How do you grow without quietly putting the thing you've built at risk?
That's the seat I'm in with Alioto's. Not propping anything up. Helping a team that's already good make clear-eyed calls about where the money goes, what the next move is, and how to compound years of work into the years ahead.
Chris put it well:
"We didn't need a scorekeeper. We needed someone who pairs serious financial firepower with a real, ground-level understanding of collision. That's exactly what Doug brings, and it helps us make better decisions across the business."
It's a privilege to sit in the numbers with operators at this level, and to be trusted with a business this well run. Chris and Matt, thank you for that. I'm genuinely excited about what's ahead.
If you're an operator who's built something strong and you're thinking about what's next for it, that's the work I do. Send me a message.

Why I sit on the Down Syndrome Indiana board
People who follow my work for the finance read sometimes ask why a fractional CFO spends his time on a Down syndrome nonprofit. The honest answer is the most personal one I have: my son Beau.
The same person in the QuickBooks file and on the acquisition call
In one week with the same client I mapped CCC accounts into QuickBooks, helped structure a calibration bonus program, and ran the math on a fourth location. That range is the job itself. Why most fractional CFO arrangements get this wrong, and what Logan Martin at Mr. Dent Collision Repair hired me to do instead.
